Caught a whopper!

This 9lb Brown Trout was caught with a Copper Hammered 35 in early July while lead core trolling one of NYC Reservoirs. We were in 100 feet of water, and fish were hitting at 28 feet in 52 degrees water. The strikes were coming after long sweeping turns as we picked up speed on the straight away. All fish were caught just after sunrise on a mix of Elmer Hinckley’s but the copper 35 was producing the best that day.

A cloudy July day produced this beautiful male reservoir brown trout while row trolling. As the weather heats up, the surface fish are forced to seek cooler temperatures. The thermocline was set up and this fish was taken on 4 colors of leadcore at 52 degrees. A copper hammered 35 was working all week producing big browns, and on this overcast morning it did the trick on this 9lb brown. The 35 works very good on long sweeping turns and with 4 colors out once the line straightened out the rod went down, almost launching out of the rowboat.

Elmer Hinckley flutter spoons are highly effective for row trolling due to their light weight, and the superior plating reflects light at deeper depths. My first introduction to Hinckley spoons was a copper unlacquered 35 that had a very aged patina. That spoon caught more Trout while trolling than any other I used. It’s still one of my favorite spoons. Photo of a man holding a large brown trout caught with an Elmer Hinckly speeon
